Eid Al Adha, the second main holiday celebrated in Islam, is expected to begin on June 28 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It falls on the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.
Employees in the private and public sectors in the UAE might
get a six-day break in June as astronomers predicted Eid Al Adha would take
place on June 28. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the Emirates Astronomy
Society, said that Dhul Hijjah or "The Month of the Pilgrimage" might
start on June 19.
Al Jarwan said, “Eid Al Adha will likely be on Wednesday,
June 28, and Arafat Day, which is one day before Eid, will be on Tuesday, June
27.”
The Moon-sighting committee of the UAE will confirm the
exact date of Eid. The UAE Cabinet has allocated four days of holidays for
Arafat Day and Eid Al Adha.
Eid Al Adha coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, the
holiest city in Islam. All Muslims are required to go to Hajj at least once in
their lives. Eid Al Adha is celebrated to honour the willingness of Abraham to
sacrifice his son Ishmael on the order of God. Dhu al-Hijja is one of the
holiest months in Islam.
Muslims believe that God asked Prophet Ibrahim in a dream to
sacrifice his son, Ismail, as a test of his obedience to the command of God.
Muslims observe this day through prayers, animal slaughter, charity, social
gatherings, meals, and exchanging gifts.
The holy festival is celebrated by every Muslim across the
world. It is a major holiday of four days for Muslims. It is also called the
Festival of Sacrifice.
